French flights strike cancellation misery

As the holiday season gets into full swing, flight delays and cancellations begin to rear their ugly head as French Air Traffic Controllers join rail workers in a nationwide strike.

With thousands of flights set to be cancelled, the first wave of strikes are scheduled to last until the end of June, causing misery for travellers.

The two biggest air traffic control unions the SNCTA and Unsa-ICNA begin a six day strike with union representatives warning of 'heavy disruption' to all flights.

The protest against aviation cuts has seen more than 60 percent of the 4000 French air traffic controllers voting in favour of the action.

Francois Hollande 's socialist government has insisted that the controversial cuts are necessary to comply with plans by the European Commission to reduce navigation air costs.

A cautious estimate predicts as many as fifty percent of flights may be cancelled during the coming week.

With more than 17 million British people travelling to France each year, tourists have been warned to expect huge delays, spelling misery for thousands.

Low cost airlines, EasyJet and Ryanair will announce contingency plans for passengers when the scale of the disruption becomes clear.
