EasyJet Passengers Delayed by Mating Turtles

Dozens of easyJet passengers were left stranded on the Greek island of Zakynthos (also known as Zante) after their plane developed a technical fault and a replacement aircraft was prevented from flying in because of mating turtles.

Passengers expressed anger at easyJet's handling of the delay, which began on Sunday. Some travellers, who did not book onto other flights, only arrived home on Tuesday.

The captain announced a fault with a wing flap at around 3pm on Sunday, and there was no communication for another hour.

Despite being told the problem would be resolved within 20 minutes, passengers were asked to disembark. One passenger said they were then left "to fend for themselves." A similar process was then repeated on Monday.

The airline said a night curfew, that protected vulnerable loggerhead turtles breeding nearby, had prevented a replacement aircraft being sent out.

EasyJet later apologised for the delay. A spokesman said:

"Around a quarter of passengers travelled on flights with alternative carriers yesterday afternoon. Passengers have been provided with hotel accommodation and expenses in line with EU261 regulations and will also be entitled to EU261 compensation."

If your flight was delayed and your airline was to blame, you may be entitled to compensation. To find out if you have a claim, call our Sheffield team on 0333 4008 172.
