AWOL RAF airman appears on reality TV show

A member of the RAF went AWOL to participate in the reality TV show Married at First Sight.

Alex Henry, 28, a personal trainer who served as an Air Specialist, left his post at RAF Spadeadam, an electronic warfare base, to appear on Channel 4's dating show. He requested additional leave last winter to take part in the show, but his commanding officer denied the request.

Disregarding the decision, Mr. Henry attended the filming. Upon his return, he was apprehended by military police and sentenced to 34 days in military prison, of which he served 24 days before being discharged from service.

According to a spokesperson for Mr. Henry, he "returned after filming of his own volition and handed himself into the military authorities." The spokesperson added that he served 24 days as a "model inmate."

In promotional materials for the show, Mr. Henry expressed his understanding of the phrase "work hard and play hard." After filming, he shared on social media, "Anything worth having in life comes with a risk."

Following the announcement of his participation in the 2024 season, allegations emerged regarding his past behavior toward women. A Channel 4 spokesperson stated, "[Married at First Sight UK] contributors undergo rigorous background checks, including multiple independent psychological evaluations and a criminal record check, before being cleared to participate."

Additionally, a Channel 4 advisor addressed concerns from those opposing his involvement, explaining, "The show was filmed several months ago and is not live, so Alexander will appear in edited programs scheduled for broadcast later this month. There will also be promotional activities in which Alexander may feature."

Mr. Henry, who also works as a personal trainer, held a non-commissioned rank responsible for providing technical expertise.
