Air Canada Passengers Furious at 30 Hour Delay

Stranded passengers broke down in tears when they were told that they had to spend a second night in a hotel when their flight was delayed by more than 30 hours.

The passengers were due to take off on Friday lunchtime, but as many as 197 travellers had to wait until the end of the weekend to get airborne.

Air Canada says it will offer a full refund to the affected customers, who were stuck in Manchester for two days before their flight finally left for Toronto on Sunday.

On Friday a reported 45 seats were overbooked when a fault with the original plane meant it needed to be replaced with a smaller aircraft. Passenger Naomi Cook said "eventually they got the 45, I think they sent them to Edinburgh, where they got £500 each and a hotel."

After a two-hour delay, the remaining passengers boarded the new plane but were turned back after another problem was discovered with the aircraft. Repeated delays meant frustrated travellers were kept on the ground until Sunday evening.

A spokesperson for Air Canada said:

"We apologise for the extended delay: this does not meet our own standards and we are sorry we've let our customers down."
