Wife who assaulted husband with toast divorces

When 40 year old Gloucestershire man James Evans asked his wife for a divorce over breakfast one morning, little did he expect to be attacked with a piece of toast!

Former wife Julie Evans, 45 saw red when her husband of 15 years announced that he wanted to divorce and things turned ugly at their marital home in Drybrook.

Cheltenham Magistrates Court heard that Mr Evans was left needing 13 stitches following the breakfast bust-up last July.

Speaking in Court, Mr and Mrs Evans described two very different versions of events with the former wife telling Magistrate Chris Summers that her husband came down to breakfast and said, "I want a divorce, swearing at her, he told her to "get out of the house".

Mr Evans claims that he simply walked into the kitchen and said, "Good morning".

Julie Evans told the Court how she felt at the time, saying, "That did annoy me and I did throw toast at him. I did put butter in his face".

Defending her actions, Mrs Evans went on to say, "He grabbed me by the throat.  I grabbed a cup to defend myself and he eventually let me go and I fell on the floor.  He noticed his ear was bleeding".

Mr Evans who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis tells a different story and alleged that it was his wife who grabbed him by the throat.

The Court cleared Mrs Evans of actual bodily harm but she admits two charges of common assault and the pair are now divorced.
