Tram Driver Injured In Rock Attack

A tram driver who was struck when a large rock smashed his window was knocked unconscious, police have revealed.

The incident happened at around 9:40 pm on Monday, when the tram was travelling between Derker and Shaw and Crompton. The rock was thrown at the tram, smashing through the windscreen and hitting the driver in the chest. His face was cut by the shards of broken glass.

Detectives are now appealing for information about the incident. They say the driver fell unconscious before being taken to hospital but has now been discharged.

Although the tram was busy with passengers, nobody else was hurt. Officers believe the stone was thrown from a footbridge that leads from Meek Street in Royton.

Detective Sergeant Allison Dyson, from Oldham CID, said:

"I would appeal to anyone walking on that bridge that may have seen anyone acting suspicious to please call the police. This was a mindless act that could have had devastating consequences and I'm just grateful the driver didn't suffer life-threatening injuries and no passengers were injured."
