A severely-ill newborn baby died in a hospital in Greater Manchester following a 'serious failure' when doctors waited three hours to administer potentially life-saving antibiotics.
Initially appearing healthy after his birth on December 23, 2013, Baby Olsberg's condition rapidly deteriorated as he was seen struggling for breath at around 9:15pm. A junior paediatrician came at 10:15pm and decided he should be given antibiotics, however, those antibiotics were not administered until approximately three hours later at 1am.
A Trust spokesman, said:
"This is a very sad case of which we would like to reiterate and offer our condolences to the family.
"We would like to thank the coroner for her comment that the Trust has been helpful and conducted itself with candour and openness.
"We accept the narrative conclusion and we will ensure any lessons will be learned from and acted upon. We have offered to meet with the family."
Unfortunately, Baby Olsberg died following three cardiac arrests after being taken to the specialist intensive care unit at Royal Oldham Hospital. Post-mortem tests revealed he had contracted a group B streptococcus (GBS) infection which had caused blood poisoning.
