An outbreak of the Norovirus bug has struck a South Devon holiday site with a mass evacuation of around 600 holidaymakers.
The highly contagious infection which causes severe vomiting has wiped out entire families with 91 suspected cases being reported in a matter of just days.
The picturesque River Dart Country Park in Ashburton has been shut down by health agencies until 18th August.
Managing Director of the Dartmoor camping and touring venue, Mark Simpson told Daily Mail reporters that the decision to close had been made after consultation with Public Health England.
Speaking of the virus which swept the area, he went on to say, "Our primary concern is naturally for the welfare of our visitors and we have not taken this very difficult decision without serious consideration".
In a statement made by the country park, the owners fully understand how the unforeseen disruption will have affected their guests and thanked them for their co-operation.
Explaining the reason for the mass evacuation, the MD added, "This will enable further investigation into the suspected Noro-type virus, which was unwittingly brought onto our site to continue and a deep-clean of the site to be undertaken".
Advice from health officials in Devon is to drink plenty of water and avoid dehydration if you are affected by the symptoms of severe vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.
