Greater Manchester NHS Hospital Trusts Accused of Taxing Sick

According to information as part of an investigation, hospitals in Greater Manchester are making £10 million a year from car parking charges.

Greater Manchester NHS trusts are being accused of taxing the sick as its found three trusts in the region rake in more than £2 million each yearly from charging patients to park. An investigation found The Central Manchester Trust and Pennine Acute Hospital NHS Trust are among 15 nationally making more than £2 million in parking charges.

Andrew Gwynne, shadow health minister and MP for Reddish and Denton, said:

"When patients go to hospital, the last thing they want to worry about is keeping the car parking ticket up to date.

"For some patients and their families, the costs can really rack up, which is why these figures are so worrying."

A Freedom of Information study also found that of 90 NHS hospital trusts, more than half of them were making at least £1 million.
