Grandmother gets three pounds compensation for pill in milk bottle

A 65 year old grandmother who was shocked to find a mystery red and white pill in her bottle of milk was disgusted to receive just £3 compensation from the dairy.

Coventry playgroup leader Joyce Williams was pouring the milk onto her breakfast porridge when the capsule fell from the container.

Bought from the Co-op store the pill has now been identified by the dairy as being a paracetamol capsule although Mulller Wiseman who supplied the milk explained in a letter to Joyce that they were at a loss to explain how it got into the bottle.

The Dairy enclosed just a £3 postal order for a replacement bottle and for Joyce's time and trouble.

The low fat milk had already been used in tea and coffee the previous day before the pill popped out and Joyce, who is allergic to Penicillin, was initially worried she may suffer a reaction.

After Mrs Williams complained to the Co-op, who have since offered her a £20 shopping voucher, Muller Wiseman Dairies collected the milk bottle and pill and took it away for analysis. Environmental Health were contacted in the first instance and when they never arrived Joyce and her family made a formal complaint to the dairy.

Worryingly, Joyce and her husband David together with 15 month old granddaughter Lydia fell ill the day after consuming the milk with a mystery stomach bug.  Speaking of the postal order she received from Muller Wiseman, Mrs Williams said "The £3 is an insult, they needn't have bothered.  They might think this is over now, but it isn't.  Co-op's investigation is ongoing and they have been very good but Muller's response has not been acceptable".

A spokesman for the dairy who delivers more than 35 million litres of milk a week says they are committed to the highest standards of quality for their products, packaging and service.
