Crackdown on immigrant benefits

The Prime Minister announced this week a large scale crackdown on out-of-work benefits for migrant workers after it was revealed that Britain spends £5billion a year on immigrant tax credits.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, an estimated 415,000 foreign nationals receive the benefits courtesy of the British welfare system.

David Cameron reportedly unveiled the new scheme to a great fanfare designed to win back Tory voters who have defected to UKIP.

In a bid to shave £100million per year off the benefits bill, Cameron announced a cap on the amount of time migrant jobseekers can claim allowances to just 3 months.

Our generous benefits system here in Britain, coupled with the higher wages paid, has proven to be a real draw to migrant workers from countries like Bulgaria, Poland and Romania.

Figures show that a family from Romania or Bulgaria could boost their take home pay by as much as eight times more here in the UK than in their own country.

Research by MigrationWatch has shown that a migrant worker with a partner and two children sees their weekly income rocketing from just £183 to a massive £543 with the help of tax credits.

Working and Child Tax Credits were originally introduced by Gordon Brown and the Labour Government and according to the Independent Migration Advisory Committee, migrant workers are more likely to be claiming these type of benefits.
