Lewisham Homes is planning to build a five-storey development of 50 new council homes. The 50 new apartments will be for the over 60s only.
The land planned to be developed is green space on the Bampton Estate. Residents have been campaigning to stop the development and are concerned about the impact on infrastructure and the change in the area's character.
44 trees will be removed. However, 32 new trees will be planted along with boxes for bats and birds.
Local resident, Dan Synge, said:
"They do have a process, and they showed us plans but they haven't really listened to our objection…We feel utterly powerless."
Ms Kartesheva who also lives on the estate, said:
"Because we don't have a garden, that is our opportunity for fresh air and grass and sun."
Mrs Kartesheva continued:
"Squashing new buildings between our block and the houses on Fifeld Path will not only deprive residents of their amenity, but will completely change the character of the area."
