The Home Office have been attacked by the Bishop of Durham for rejecting an asylum claim on the basis that they suggested that Christianity is "not a peaceful religion". This comment you might imagine is somewhat controversial.
The male, original from Iran, tried to enter the UK in 2016 but his application was rejected by the Home Office. They stated that his conversion from Islam was inconsistent with his claim that Christianity was a peaceful religion.
Alledgedly the Home Office generated a long and apparently "unbelievably offensive" refusal letter in which six references were made from the Book Of Revelations. Quotes used in the letter to the individual included words such as "revenge, destruction, death and violence".
The concluding part of the letter commented, "These are inconsistent with your claim you converted to Christianity after discovering it was a "peaceful" religion as opposed to Islam". The solicitor representing the applicant said he was shocked to read such, "unbelievably offensive diatribe" and would latterly appeal against the ruling.
Furthermore the CEO of the National Secular Society said, "It's not the role of the Home Office to play theologian".
Latterly the Home Office appears to have retreated from it's original stance by stating, "This letter is not in accordance witrh our policy".
