Facebook cited in one third of divorce cases

New research has shown that Facebook is now cited in one third of all divorce cases.

A survey of legal firms' caseloads revealed that couples are increasingly reliant upon the social network as proof of inappropriate behaviour, infidelity, and new relationships.

The website can also help track people's movements, and records expenditure on items such as new cars and holidays, making it easier for partners to detect lies and discrepancies.

Facebook is also playing an increasing role in enabling users to get back in touch with old flames they hadn't heard from in years.

Perhaps the most shocking statistic of all to emerge comes from Italy, where recent reports estimate that Whatsapp, the instant messaging service recently purchased by Facebook for $19billion, is cited in almost half of all Italian divorce proceedings.
