Doctors Less Likely to Divorce According to Study

A new study published by the British Medical Journal (BMJ) suggests doctors are less likely to divorce than other professionals.

Census data collected between 2008 and 2013 relating to a variety of professionals, including dentists, nurses, physicians, lawyers and pharmacists, was analysed by researchers at Harvard Medical School.

They found that doctors were the least likely to divorce amongst all of the professionals surveyed, with 22% ending their marriages compared with 28% of lawyers getting divorced. Doctors were also less likely to have been married more than once.

Furthermore, when gender and work schedules were taken into account, the researchers found that female doctors were more likely to divorce their partners than their male counterparts, especially if they were working more than 40 hours a week. This was in stark contrast to male doctors working 40 hours or more, who were less likely to get divorced.

Researcher, Anupam B. Jena, said:

"If you're a female physician, not only do you have to deal with the stress and the long hours of work, but then you have the household and potentially childcare on top of that."
