Thousands of motorists could see their speeding convictions overturned after a road safety firm used by police was accused of acting unlawfully.
Road Safety Support Ltd (RSS) is paid thousands of pounds a year by police forces to advise on speed camera plans and to provide expert evidence in court cases.
But RSS is now facing claims is has been acting unlawfully for the past decade because it is not a registered law firm.
If the allegations under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) watchdog are proven, it could prompt a deluge of appeals by drivers convicted as a result of RSS's work.
Motoring law expert Emma Patterson believes the firm should not be advising police on court cases or running prosecutions because it is not authorised with the SRA to sell legal services. She said:
"If it was to transpire that RSS and their courtroom advocate were not properly authorised or regulated, it would raise the question as to the validity of all the cases in which they were involved."
RSS said: "We are fully committed to saving lives on the road and supporting the judicial processes. We are not aware of any formal investigation into our colleagues."
