Post Office Workers to Stage Pre-Christmas Strike

A union representing Post Office workers has defended a decision to strike in the week before Christmas.

Workers will stage five days of strikes, starting Monday, because of disputes regarding jobs, pensions, and branch closures. The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the walkout would start on Monday 19 December and would include Christmas Eve.

Dave Ward of the CWU defended the decision to strike, saying it was "now or never." "[We have to do this] if we want to make a difference," he said.

The industrial action will affect only Crown Post Offices – the larger branches usually found on highstreets. The Post Office has said it will be "business as usual" with "at least" 97% of its 11,600 branches operating as normal.

CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey, said:

"Our members want the Post Office management to pause its closure and privatisation programme, hold off on its planned pensions changes, and commit to sitting down with us and with the other key stakeholders of this Great British institution and, together, construct a lasting vision."

The Post Office said it was "extremely disappointed" by the CWU's action.
