A multi-use development planned for Tameside has moved one step closer following a lodged planning application for a Denton link road.
The project, which has been a priority for town hall chiefs since the Oldham Batteries factory closed down in 2002, is set to regenerate the site into a mix of residential properties and retail and leisure facilities.
A spokesman for Tameside council said:
"This offers a unique opportunity to deliver a link road to relieve traffic congestion and assist the council's long-standing ambition to encourage the mixed use retail, residential and leisure regeneration of the area."
Owner Langtree initially made an application for up to 150 homes to be built on the Oldham Batteries site but had been refused by the council earlier this year on the grounds that plans for the Denton link road had not been finalised. This could, however, be overturned now that the plans have been lodged.
For years the 6.3-hectare site has been the target of vandalism, anti-social behaviour and illegal travellers but planning permission will see this change through the site's eventual regeneration.
