The NHS has begun rationing hearing aids for the deaf, with thousands of people being offered only one device when experts say they need two.
Hearing specialists advise that patients who are losing the hearing in both ears should receive two hearing aids, but some NHS authorities have started to offer only one device to such people, in a cost-cutting exercise.
The charity Action on Hearing Loss has found four hospital trusts in England and two health boards in Wales, who now initially offer one aid. This cost-cutting practice saves a modest £90 per person.
Most of the authorities involved say they will provide patients with a second device if they ask for one.
Chief executive of Action on Hearing Loss, Paul Breckell, described the cutbacks as "alarming" and added that "with only one hearing aid, the ability to understand speech from the unaided ear can deteriorate over time to the point that it can't be recovered."
