A man who was awarded £13,000 from police for wrongful arrest was re-arrested and had his cash seized, just moments after collecting part of the payment.
24-year-old Kevin Duffy, from Liverpool, won the money after being imprisoned for breaching bail conditions, even though the charges had already been dropped.
Police admitted false imprisonment and assault – Mr Duffy says he was forced to strip naked – and reached an out-of-court settlement.
But just after Mr Duffy cashed the first payment of £3,000, police stopped the car he was travelling in, arrested him, and held onto the money for almost a month.
He said "They said they were searching the car for cannabis, because they could smell it inside the car."
Mr Duffy was arrested and locked up for six hours before being released. When he asked for the cash, he was told it was at a different police station.
He said "I didn't get it back until a month later and in the meantime I had to borrow money and pay interest."
A spokesman for Merseyside Police said "As enquiries are currently being made into this complaint it would be inappropriate to comment any further."
