Victims of stalking in South Yorkshire are being reminded that stalking is a crime and are urged not to suffer in silence.
National Stalking Awareness Week, which drew to a close on Friday 24th April 2015, is lead by the National Stalking Helpline every year in April to raise awareness about stalking and to de-mystify the crime. With one in six women and one in twelve men being stalked at some point in their lives, the campaign looks at the different ways stalking can manifest and how to deal with it.
Pete Horner, manager of South Yorkshire Police's Public Protection Unit, is reminding the public that stalking and harassment are criminal offences and urges victims to speak out if they are suffering.
Mr Horner said:
"Stalking can mean so many different things and includes many different behaviours, which is why this week is so important."
"We need the public to recognise that harassment and stalking can take many forms and if someone has concerns, they need to know who to tell and where to go for advice."
