A former Scunthorpe shop owner has been sentenced for selling counterfeit tobacco products.
Milan Muhammed was the owner of Smiths Convenience Store on Frodingham Road at the time of the offences.
In August 2017 an operation was carried out by North Lincolnshire Council's Trading Standards Team, during which a packet of illegal tobacco was test purchased at the store.
North Lincolnshire Council said officers then visited the premises and discovered a newly-constructed secret compartment filled with illicit tobacco.
The local authority says that in total, 892 packets of cigarettes and 6.25kg of rolling tobacco was seized. It is estimated that the products have a street value of around £3,300.
At Grimsby Magistrates' Court, Muhammed pleaded guilty to 12 offences relating to the sale of counterfeit goods. He has been given a 12 month community order and ordered to pay £610 costs and £85 victim surcharge.
Councillor Richard Hannigan, cabinet member for safer, greener and cleaner places, said:
"As well as a warning for those who choose to deal in illegal products, we want to provide a caution for people who buy illegal goods. You don't always know what is in these products, which is putting your health even more at risk."
