The government has been under attack this week for the impact that could arise from the proposed cuts. Justice Secretary, Chris Grayling, is planning measures to decrease the criminal legal aid bill which currently stands at approximately £1b.
Some changes proposed include:
Price competitive tendering for legal aid contracts.
Introducing a limit of £37,500 of total household income for individuals to be automatically granted legal aid.
Preventing prisoners access to legal aid unless relating to their sentence.
Changes to the law with respect to immigrants access to legal aid.
