A knife bin has been installed in South Yorkshire to tackle knife crime and crimes relating to weapons. The knife bin has been installed outside the Rock Christian Centre on Handley Street in the Burngreave area of Sheffield.
Dr Alan Bilings, the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner, said:
"We have been anxious for some time about the number of people who carry knives and the growth in the incidence of stabbings. In some instances this has led to horrific injuries and even death."
He further commented:
"I recently visited Burngreave with officers on a knife crime operation, and in a very short space of time, we found knives hidden in bushes. The knife bin will provide people with a safe place to dispose of any weapons or unwanted knives and make Sheffield a safer place."
Funding was granted in the amount of £4,500 which covers the cost of the knife bin and will ensure the bin is securely emptied on a regular basis and for the disposal of the knifes.
Detective Superintendent, Una Jennings, the Armed Criminality lead for South Yorkshire Police, said:
"You could receive a life sentence behind bars if you fatally injure someone or, you could be the fatally injured person, and leave your family and loved ones distraught and heartbroken… Please consider the life changing impact it could have on yourself or on your loved one, and encourage them to make use of the bin and discard their weapon."
