Crime busting rate drops

Both knife crime and robbery offences have spiked whilst criminal matters being solved by police activity has fallen to less than one offence in sixteen.

In the year to December 2019 knife related matters rose to 45,627 offences. This is an increase of seven percent during the same period a year before. It is also the highest number since records were recorded.

The number of reported robberies rose to 84,000, a 12% increase, and that number has risen over the course of the last 4 years.

By contrast, according to the Office For National Statistics, the proprtion of offences prosecuted by police has fallen. In the six month period to December '19 the number stood at 6.7%.

A large drop was noted in rape charges where the numbers fell from 17.2% to 1.3%. Upto half the number of rape victims withdraw allegations before trial and it has been suggested that this is in part due to police activity to review mobile phone use by the accusers.

Keith Hunter, former Chief Superintendant, said, "We need to be seen to be delivering justice to encourage people to come forward and report crime".

The Victims Commissioner, Dame Vera Baird, commented that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) claimed police were referring fewer cases to them but noted that the CPS was still prosecuting less than half as many as it did in 2017.

She said, "They now need to explain to women, who are the principal victims of rape, but also to male complainants why – since their sole job is to prosecute – they are not doing it. It is worrying that victims are not likely to see justice and if they are in need of compensation they are not going to get it."

Additionallly there was also an 11 per cent increase in the total number of domestic abuse-related offences. This rose to 741,819 matters. There was also a 2 per cent rise in homicides to 670. This number includes the 39 who died in the people-smuggling tragedy in Essex.
