A crackdown on watching illegal streams via the Kodi media player is to come into effect, as the consortium fights to improve its public image.
Kodi media players are completely legal, but because they are open source, pirates can alter any code put in place to block third party plug-ins and add-ons to allow users to stream illegally copied films and TV shows.
Because of these vulnerabilities, Kodi has now gained a reputation as a "piracy facilitator" and large companies such as Netflix and Amazon refuse to work with it.
Now, the XBMC Foundation, the non-profit organisation that operates the Kodi project, has announced measures to combat the piracy.
Nathan Betzen, Kodi product manager, said:
"If you are selling a box on your website designed to trick users into thinking broken add-ons come from us and work perfectly, so you can make a buck, we're going to do everything we can to stop you.
"If you are making a video in which you claim to be a Kodi developer or Kodi team member or you are just using the Kodi name while assuring users that some pirate add-on is totally legal and isn't going to break next week, we will do everything we can to take you down."
Several sellers in the UK have already been arrested and charged with copyright offences. Some have been fined while others have received jail sentences.
