The Court Interpreting Service is under scrutiny again this month as outsourcing recruitment leaders Capita fail to meet their targets for a second year.
A report by the National Audit Office on behalf of the Ministry of Justice has revealed that since the contract for language services with Capita began in January 2012, it has failed to hit its' 98% performance target.
The public spending watchdog has published this second report and has found some progress has been made towards implementing recommendations made by the Public Accounts Committee. This came as a result of a damning report by the PAC in December 2012.
It is clear from the recent findings that there are still areas where the service need to improve although the NAO acknowledge that audit checks are now being carried out on the security status of interpreters. This was initially raised in the 2012 version of the PAC's report.
According to the Law Society Gazette, there has been a significant rise in the number of interpreters available to work under the current contract. Figures show that by November 2013 and since the start of the contract with Capita, the level had risen 102% from 1,365 to 2,705.
