900 Post Office convictions to be reviewed

Nine hundred convictions of Post Office subpostmasters are being reviewed amid claims of miscarriages of justice following the Horizon computer system scandal.

A defective computer system resulted in hundreds of subpostmasters being wrongly accused of theft and false accounting. Some subpostmasters were made bankrupt whilst others were prosecuted and some even jailed.

A £58 million settlement at the High Court was approved by Mr Justice Fraser last year between the Post Office and more than 550 claimants.

An "extensive" review dating back to when the Horizon computer system was first rolled out in 1999, will be conducted by the Post Office.  A detailed record search into the oldest cases identified around 900 prosecutions that may have relied on Horizon data, and this review is to search for, and identify, any material that might cast uncertainty on the security of the convictions.

A spokesman for the Post Office pledged to "leave no stone unturned" and further commented, "the Post Office has taken determined action to both address the past and provide fundamental reform for the future,".

"We agreed a comprehensive resolution last year with claimants in group civil litigation, following successful independent mediation. We sincerely apologise to those affected by past events."

"We have been working closely with the Criminal Cases Review Commission since applications were first made to them and we will be, similarly, assisting the Courts regarding cases referred for appeal."

The Great Post Office Trial, a new series on BBC Radio 4, will be broadcast live every weekday until June 5 at 1.45pm, and speaks to victims of the scandal.
