Gilston Garden Town 'Inevitable' Says Estate Agent

The director of an estate agency has said the proposed building of a garden town to Harlow's north will go ahead.

Housing association Places For People has now received backing from local and central government for their Gilston Park Estate plan, which could consist of more than 10,000 new homes.

Despite vocal opposition from campaign group Stop Harlow North, the proposals could be passed in the coming 18 months as part of the local plans for Epping, East Herts and Harlow councils.

The Gilston development contains seven distinct villages separated by green space, and was one of three garden towns to receive government support in a recent announcement.

Daniel Galati, land and homes director at estate agency Mullucks Wells, said:

"As a resident I have the same concerns as everyone else. But we have to accept the announcement means it is inevitable. Whilst this will bring its own challenges we also have to recognise there are accompanying benefits.

"Density is key. Many other sites have been developed with twice that number of houses per hectare. This means there will be plenty of incidental and strategic open space, helping to preserve and protect the countryside nearby.

"The fact it has been divided into seven individual villages is also promising. I think they have learnt from other developments which have ended up looking like an unconstrained urban sprawl."
