Workers On Strike After Pensions Dispute

Members of the GMB Union are manning 18 picket lines across the North West this weekend (February 19th to Saturday 20th) in protest at proposed changes to the workers' defined benefit pension scheme.

The Ellesmere Port Waste Water Treatment Works in Little Stanney is the location of one of the picket lines, where workers are going on strike following a long-running dispute with United Utilities.

Workers have resorted to industrial action in protest at United Utilities' proposed money saving changes to the defined benefit pension scheme.

Despite the walkout, the Union has reassured United Utilities customers that there will be no disruption to the services provided, as there is an agreed process in place, should a major incident occur.

Eddie Parker, regional officer for the GMB, said would like to stress that we are in dispute with the managers and shareholders of UU and not the customers.

"GMB has agreed an escalation process should there be a major incident such as the recent Cumbrian floods or other emergencies impacting on the life and limb of customers during the course of industrial action."
