Justin Madders, Labour MP for Ellesmere Port and Neston, has called for an end to what he calls the "Neston rail fare rip-off."
Mr Madders says that for the same journey, Neston residents can pay as much as double the fares as those paid by residents of nearby Hooton.
According to the National Rail Enquiries Website, a return ticket from Neston to Southport costs £13.30, while the same journey from Hooton costs just £6.45. Furthermore, passengers travelling from Hooton also benefit from a more regular train service, as well as shorter journey times.
Speaking about the problem, Mr Madders said:
"It is an outrage that Neston residents are being charged twice as much for the same journey as people living just a few miles away. The people of Neston also face the double disadvantage of being charged rip-off fares for infrequent and unreliable services.
"I'm disappointed the Government were not interested in holding a debate about this issue which I know occurs in a number of other areas across the country. There should not be a postcode lottery when it comes to rail fares.
"I've tabled a question to the Secretary of State for Transport on this subject and if my question is drawn I will again call on the Government to act to bring an end to this longstanding problem."
