Technical issue concerning Dental Graduates from Cardiff

The General Dental Council has recently issued a statement suggesting it has discovered a number of "technical issues" affecting those graduating from Cardiff University from 2010 to 2014.

 

The University and the General Dental Council (GDC) have both emphasised that the 316 dentists involved are still able to practice lawfully. 

 

Seemingly, in a letter sent by the GDC, the issue stems from organisational changes at the University during 2009.  

 

When the Universtity established the dental department it ommited to accredit itself as a medical authority via the Privy Council. As such there is an oustanding matter affecting the registration of dentists courtesy of the Dentist Act.

 

It has been stressed that patients were not put at risk and the quality of their degrees is not in question. 

 

The General Dental Council and Cardiff University have stated that they have put into effect measures to correct the oversight. Commenting on the situation, BDA Chief Executive, Peter Ward, said, "this situation is highly regrettable. It is clear that there is no question of the fitness to practise of the dentists involved and no suggestion of risk to patients".

 

He then went on to say, "But the combination of errors beyond the control of the graduates must be causing unnecessary anxiety and stress. I hope the matter is resolved very quickly and there are no residual detriments to anyone concerned."

 

However, in the interim, the BDA has advised that the individual dentists should contact their Professional Indemnity Insurer to appraise them of the situation.
