Brits are being urged to visit their pharmacists instead of A&E as hospitals are already stretched with the amount of patients this winter.
The NHS are having to deal with the demand of the growing population warned health secretary, Jeremy Hunt.
He announced the amount of patients who are expected in the next few months means a £300m boost will be needed to help pay for extra beds and more staff.
Mr Hunt said, "Emergency admissions are growing about 3-4% year in, year out. We are very aware that over this winter there is going to be some real pressure there. The pressures are higher than they have ever been before in this system."
He added: "It is worth also asking the question, is this going to go on like this? Are we going to have to continue having to put more and more sums into the NHS to withstand these pressures?"
Health officials have announced they want to move the NHS to a "seven- day cross- system" model. This will help the elderly to receive care from their homes instead of travelling to hospital as well as including better staffing at weekends.
Andy Burham, shadow health secretary said, "We've been telling David Cameron for more than two years to get a grip on the crisis he created in A&E. Throwing money at it when winter's about to start is not good enough."
