Harley Street dentist operates on tiger

A Harley Street dental surgeon has stared danger in the mouth by performing surgery on one of the world's biggest cats – a Sumatran tiger.

Nine-year-old Amir, from Howletts Wild Animal Park in Kent, needed fillings on three chipped front teeth to prevent causing him future pain and discomfort.

The beast was sedated at the park and transported to the surgery by feline tooth expert Peter Kertesz. Experts said it was a difficult procedure because in a tiger the tooth's root can be up to six times deeper than that of a human.

Head of the carnivore section at the park, Ben Warren, said "Although the broken teeth weren't causing him any discomfort, we knew that a filling would be the best course of action to prevent any deterioration."

Jane Hopper, vet at the park near Canterbury, said Amir was on track for a perfect recovery but that a close eye would be kept on him in the coming weeks.
