The number of people who became British citizens across the Greater Manchester area fell by 42 per cent in 2014.
A total of 4,170 people attended UK Citizenship ceremonies last year; down on last year's figure of 7,223 and the region's lowest total of new citizens since 2007. The decline was also mirrored nationally, with the government approving 207,989 less applications based on last year's figure, with 2014's total of new citizens sitting at 125,653.
If you're unfamiliar with the citizenship ceremony, an overseas national can apply to become a British citizen after they have lived in the UK for five years, have a good standard of speaking English and have passed the Life in the UK general knowledge test.
The Life in the UK test is a compulsory exam which must be passed by all overseas nationals who want to become a citizen of the United Kingdom. The test covers topics ranging from history and religion to sport and traditions.
