Passengers travelling from Manchester to America may be able to land as domestic travellers if Manchester airport receives the go-ahead for United States immigration clearance scheme.
The US Department of Homeland Security has shortlisted the North West airport as a priority site for American security pre-clearance, which would allow passengers to clear security checks before taking off. This means passengers could land in the US as a domestic traveller without having to show their passports or go through immigration and customs.
Ken O'Toole, Manchester airport chief, said:
"A service like this has the potential to enhance the customer experience for passengers travelling to the US from the UK's Global Gateway from the North. It will potentially make Manchester more attractive to airlines looking to start routes from the US into the UK."
Although a date for the decision to be made has yet to be set, a similar scheme has been running at Shannon and Dublin airports in Ireland for a number of years and has proved to be highly popular with travellers.
