Human Rights Act Must Be Saved

Theresa May has called for Britain to be removed from the European court of human rights, or for it to have a thoroughly reduced role in the UK.

In an article published on the Guardian's website this month, Owen Bowcott, their legal affairs correspondent, explains how Britain's worldwide reputation is being tarnished by political attacks on the Human Rights Act.

It's not just May who has called for a withdrawal. The Justice Secretary, Chris Grayling, has spoken out too, saying that, if anything, it needs to have a reduced role in the UK.

Sir Nicolas Bratza who has recently stepped down from his title as Europe's most senior judge has launched a public campaign to save the legislation from "those determined to destroy" it. He condemned the "virulence of the attacks" on the Strasbourg court, calling it a "Mickey Mouse tribunal".

The article reports that it is down to the press and politicians to speak out and protect human rights in the UK.
