Divorcees Over the Age of 60 Increasing

Between the years 1990 and 2012, the number of divorced individuals over the age of 60 has increased by 85% despite divorce rates steadily declining among the total population.

A report by the International Longevity Centre (ILC-UK) details this increase and speculates a further increase of 41%, from 15,700 in 2012 to 22,000 in 2037, based on data for current marriage and divorce rates by age.

Ben Franklin, senior research fellow at ILC-UK, said:

"A growing number of older people experiencing divorce presents significant challenges at an individual and societal level.

"Increasing divorce rates and numbers might result in greater isolation, illness and a need for more formal care.

"At any age it is vital that individuals seek out relationship support. The rising number of divorces amongst the over 60s is something that policymakers, charities and services providers should factor-in when considering the potential vulnerabilities facing older people."

More marriages are ending in divorce rather than the death of a spouse because of external factors such as changing social attitudes towards divorce, the greater financial independence of working women and increases in life expectancy.
