Apple and Ericsson Sign Global Patent Agreement

Apple and Ericsson have decided to end their litigation battles by signing a global patent agreement to work together on 5G technology.

Apple and Ericsson are set to develop 5G technology together for the next generation of mobile data communication after ending lawsuits in the United States, UK, Germany and the Netherlands. Both have signed a global patent agreement ending all litigation between the companies, which will also allow Apple to use Ericsson's standard essential patents as well as certain other patents.

Kasim Alfalahi, Chief Intellectual Property Officer at Ericsson, said:

"We are pleased with this new agreement with Apple, which clears the way for both companies to continue to focus on bringing new technology to the global market, and opens up for more joint business opportunities in the future."

Although he financial terms of the deal remain strictly confidential, Apple will make an initial payment to Ericsson and pay ongoing royalties as part of a seven year deal. Ericsson, which is the world's largest mobile network equipment provider, holds over 35,000 patents related to 2G, 3G and 4G wireless technology.
