One in seven Mancunians would rather get a divorce than go to the dentist according to a recent survey carried out by Toothpick, the UK's largest online dental appointment booking service.
The survey, which was conducted by Toothpick founder and qualified dentist Sandeep Senghera, found that 14.2% of people in Manchester had such an adverse reaction to the dentist that they would rather go through a divorce than visit their dental practitioner. This figure was above the North West average of 13.9% but more than double that of London and Wales, who both scored a low 5.9 percent.
Dental phobia, also known as odontophobia, is a serious problem for many patients in the UK. Among a trip to the dentist, the top situations considered to be most stressful included a job interview, moving house and trouble with the in-laws.
Mr Senghera said:
"It's clear that as a nation we still have a deep-seated fear of the dentist and the less we visit the dentist, the more likely we are to perpetuate a vicious circle."
"When we don't visit the dentist, we are more likely to experience more dental decay or other problems with our teeth compared to when we have regular check-ups."
