A medical negligence barrister has been awarded £2 million from the NHS following botched appendix surgery.
Gerwyn Samuel, 51, was left with what was "akin to locked-in-syndrome" after the operation in 2010, his council said.
Robert Glancy QC told the High Court "[Mr Samuel] was paralysed but conscious. He felt he was suffocating."
Mr Samuel recovered, but his wound burst and he was left screaming for fifteen minutes before help arrived. He then needed further surgery for a blood clot.
Since leaving the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, North London, Mr Samuel has endured a painful abdominal bulge.
Judge Mr Justice Mitting said "He must retire at 55 at the latest. If not for the events of May 2010, he could have continued until 60."
The Royal Free's NHS trust admitted negligence but disputed the value of the claim.
