A group campaigning against a planned expansion to a hazardous waste depot are preparing to take their battle to the Supreme Court.
The extension plans at Whitemoss were originally given the go-ahead by government in 2015, prompting members of Action to Reduce and Recycle Our Waste (ARROW) No Whitemoss Landfill to mount a legal challenge to the Secretary of State's decision.
However, the case was rejected at the Court of Appeal. The group is now facing a £16,800 legal bill to take their battle to the Supreme Court. They believe the judgment will have national implications for future infrastructure projects.
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has lent her support to the group, saying:
"I share the concerns of my constituents about the dumping of hazardous waste on the Whitemoss site and have always supported the campaign against this and do not intend to stop now.
"The decision has been called 'clear and unequivocal' – I totally disagree. Large sections of the Appeal Court judgement appear to be in residents' favour; it was ambiguous in parts, at best."
