Sun Cream Leaves Children With Severe Sunburn

A mum claimed her children's skin resembled 'burnt bacon' even after applying factor 50 sunscreen half a dozen times.

Claire Tymon, from Hull, said son Louie, 8 and daughter Millie, 12, suffered third degree burns despite repeated applications of SPF factor 50 Banana Boat Ultramist sunscreen.

Miss Tymon bought the sunscreen from Home Bargains a couple of weeks before the family's 11-day trip to Spain. She says she applied it to her children throughout the day as per the instructions on the bottle.

Doctors in Spain told Miss Tymon that if Louie has been out in the sun for much longer that he may have needed plastic surgery.

The story comes after independent health advisors Environmental Working Group listed another Banana Boat product, the Kids' SPF Factor 100 sunscreen and sun lotion, on a list of 14 sun protection products to avoid. The organisation claimed the cream's SPF factor is actually lower than advertised.

A spokesman for the company said:

"We at Banana Boat, take all of our consumer's concerns seriously and investigate all cases when we are contacted directly about someone who has encountered a reaction when using our products.

"However, it is difficult to determine what may have caused the reported problem without speaking with the consumer, examining the product or determining the specific type of reaction."
