The Prime suspect in the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher will be questioned in the High Court. Currently living in Berkshire Saleh Ibrahim Mabrouk is subject to a Civil prosection.
Solicitors acting for John Murray, the officer who held WPC Fletcher in his arms before she died, began civil proceedings against Saleh Ibrahim Mabrouk. Mr Mabrouk was a confidant of Colonel Gaddafi, the former Libya dictator.
The Government refused to disclose evidence against Mr Mabrouk in 2017 with the suggestion being that there were national security considerations to be considered.
The court action coincides with the 35th anniversary Yvonne Fletcher's death. Her death was the result of bullets fired from the site of the Libyan embassy in St James's Square, London, during a 10 day siege starting on the 17th April 1984.
As a consequence of the incident thirty Embassy occupants were deported.
During 2007 a confidential review suggested the shooting and murder were both pre-arranged and that Mr Mabrouk was identified as, potentially, the ringleader.
In 2011 Mr Mabrouk claimed asylum in the UK in 2011 and currently lives in Berkshire. He is the only person to have been arrested in connection with the killing.
During 2017, the Metropolitan Police attacked the Home Office and stated, "We believe our investigation has identified enough material to identify those responsible for WPc Fletcher's murder if it could be presented to a court. However, the key material has not been made available for use in court in evidential form for reasons of national security."
The outcome of the case is not expected to lead to a compensation claim, but it is intended to lead to further answers fortcoming about what happened on the day.
The action has been described as, "the last throw of the dice" for those who wanting to bring to justice those responsible for the killing. Depending upon the answers generated by the action the Crown Prosecution Service may be forced to reopen criminal action.
Matouk Mohammed Matouk, Abdulgader Mohammed Baghdadi and Abdulmagid Salah Ameri were linked to the conspiracy to cause WPC Fletchers death. However only Matouk is still believed to be still alive.
