Skip lorry driver kills 5 year old boy

A 5 year old boy was killed when a speeding skip lorry driver hit him on a South London road.

Woolwich Crown Court heard that 48 year old Lee Catton had been allegedly driving at 42mph in a 30mph zone when the accident happened.

Little Hichame Bouadami has been walking with his mother close to the Elephant and Castle roundabout when he lost contact with his mothers hand and ran into the road.

A speed recording device in the lorry drivers cab showed that the vehicle had been travelling above the speed limit when it hit Hichame.

It is thought that Hichame died instantaneously at the scene with terrible injuries according to eyewitnesses.

Catton admitted in court that "by the time I saw him it was too late", the driver told the jury that he saw a figure in the road at the last minute before his vehicle dragged Hichame under its wheels.

The man denies causing death by dangerous driving a further charge of careless driving although the court heard that the consequences of the crash had impacted deeply on him.

Jacob Hallam, prosecuting said,"This is tragic case. It involves the sudden death of a little boy".
