According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there was a 'statistically significant' increase in net migration into Britain in the year up to March, from 175,000 to 243,000.
Around two-thirds of these were EU citizens, including a rise in arrivals from Romania and Bulgaria.
The quarterly statistics showed that a total of 560,000 immigrants arrived in the UK, while an estimated 316,000 people left.
This trend of more people coming to Britain than are leaving it, is one which has continued for the past 20 years. In the past, some of the key reasons for this were the amounts of students entering Britain to study, and those seeking refuge.
However the reasons are changing, and today the British economy is one of the key draws for immigrants seeking work.
On the same day the immigration statistics were released, the ONS also published figures showing that in 2013, 12.4 per cent of the UK's 'usual population' were born abroad. This is an increase from 8.9 per cent in 2004.
The number of people of non-British nationality has also risen, from 5 per cent to 7.8 per cent.
There was also an increase in the numbers of births to mothers who were themselves not born in the UK, the previous year's figure of 25.9 per cent up slightly to 26.5 per cent.
