A pilot scheme which requires landlords to check up on their tenants has allowed the Home Office to track down more than 100 illegal immigrants.
The so-called 'Right to Rent' scheme, which piloted for six months, is now rolling out nationwide and will require all landlords to check the immigration status of their tenants. The programme, which will result in a fine of up to £3,000 if a landlord fails to carry out checks on potential tenants, will roll out across England from February 2016.
James Brokenshire, Minister for Security and Immigration at the Home Office, said:
"This demonstrates the government's determination to control immigration in the interests of the whole country and in ensuring that people here unlawfully are not able to enjoy a settled life here in defiance of our laws."
Of the 109 illegal immigrants found and identified during the pilot scheme, 63 of whom were previously unknown to the Home Office, nine have been removed from Britain, five are pending removal.
