A unearthed glitch in an online government form has sparked uncertainty into the calculation of settlements for couples who divorced in the last 20 months.
Nicola Matheson-Durrant, a family law specialist in Berkshire, uncovered a problem with the way settlements were being calculated using the Ministry of Justice's Form E, which was leaving debts out of its automated calculations. Although the problem was rectified earlier this month, the error had been present on the MoJ website since April 2014.
Ms Matheson-Durrant, of the Family Law Clinic in Berkshire, said:
"It is only about litigants in person, people who haven't got solicitors, and people who have used solicitors who have used that particular version of the Form E - there are other versions which don't have this error."
The error means that some couples who have settled divorces in the past 20 months may have to re-open negotiations.
