A Worcestershire mayor has backed an appeal for a specialist piece of equipment to be used in the treatment of prostate cancer patients.
Mayor of Stourport Councillor Cliff Brewer has publicly named the Rory the Robot appeal, of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, as one of his charities of the year for 2015-2016. A charity fund aims to raise £1.6 million, for which Councillor Brewer said he is planning a number of fundraising events for.
He said:
"Prostate cancer contributes to many fatalities ... One day, hopefully, a remedy will be found to counteract this condition.
"The Rory the Robot appeal helps to raise much needed funds and awareness for this very worthy cause."
In Worcestershire alone, roughly 450-550 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed each year, with 2,500 men living with the disease at any one time in the county. The robotic machine will give surgeons across the country the ability to remove tumours less painfully, with minimum blood loss and a reduced risk of complications.
