School Plays Down Bleach Attack Incident

A bleach attack on a 12-year-old buy has been dismissed as a "silly accident" by the school he attended.

The incident happened on Birdbrook Road in Birmingham on Thursday September 22. A 12-year-old boy who was in his first term at Great Barr School was accosted by other pupils, pinned down, and had bleach poured in his eyes.

Doctors said that it was only the boy's glasses that had prevented him from losing part of his sight.

Ingrid Abrahams, head teacher at Great Barr School, said:

"This was an argument between two children long after the school day had ended and some way from the school site.

"One child found a bottle half filled with liquid on the ground and, thinking it was water, poured it onto the other child. Although it contained a toilet cleaning fluid, he could not have known what was in the bottle."

The comments have caused anger with some parents who do not believe the incident is being treated seriously enough. One parent said that he believed the victim is "frightened to death of going back to school" and commented that his own son is now too nervous to walk home from school on his own.

It is believed two schoolboys were suspended following the incident, but the school has not commented on whether they have since returned to the school.
